Local Attractions in the Vendée

Lapwing House is located in the tranquil village of Lairoux, only a 15 minutes drive from the coast and the fantastic beaches of the southern Vendée. The village is on the edge of the Marais Poitevin and there is a wetlands valley within walking distance - with lots of birds and wildlife - you can even use the bird hide to see the many migratory birds that feed there.

There is a small bar and restaurant only a very short walk away on the other side of the village square, and the village often holds fêtes and events such as boules competition, annual cycling race, traditional dancing for the 14th July, escorted walks around the countryside and car boot sales/markets.

There are many tourist attractions nearby - with activities to suit all ages - such as the O'Gliss Water Park and Indian Forest Adventure Park at Moutiers les Mauxfaits - where you can swing through the trees and abseil over a lake. You can take a journey back in time to the era of The Vikings,The Gladiators, the Musketeers or Medieval knights in the world famous Puy du Fou Theme Park. There is also a superb open-air show in the evening. Book well in advance!

Further afield is the famous Venise Verte with its miles of canals criss-crossing the landscape. Here you can hire a boat for the morning and explore the countryside from a unique water perspective. Along the way you will come across many ruined abbeys, most of which hold events throughout the summer including spectacular evening firework displays. The renaissance town of Fontenay le Comte is also worth a visit, with its impressive architecture and its weekly street markets it is always full of life.

Lapwing House is only a short drive from the many beaches of the Vendée. Here, you will be spoilt for choice. You can sunbathe in the soft sand, build sand castles, surf, bodyboard or explore the many rock pools of some of the beaches. In the summer months many of the beaches have entertainment laid on - with sporting competitions during the day and musical events in the evenings. The area is also famous for its locally caught seafood and there are many good restaurants in the seaside resorts.

The old port of La Rochelle is only a 40 minute drive from the village and here you will find a wide variety of restaurants and cafés lining the harbour - a great place to sit and watch the world go by. In the summer, the harbour area is closed off to traffic each evening and street entertainers and markets line the roads. The atmosphere is fantastic and there are often many festivals and events taking place throughout the town - such as film and cinema events, rock concerts, music festivals and yachting events.
