The Ruined Chatau at Talmont Saint Hilaire

Guest Reviews from 2012 until 2015 for Lapwing House

The Buckley Family, Kent June 2012

Had a great time at Lapwing House - kids loved the new pool and would recommend a day trip to Coulon - Venise Verte. Did not manage to catch the bread van - thought we heard him once or twice, but when we rushed out he was not there - perhaps he had a holiday!

Enid & Lyall, Tyne & Wear, August 2012

Very enjoyable stay!! First time ever in France & Vendée and we will return again. Peace & quiet & great pub opposite. More to see next time.

The Edwards Family, Tyne & Wear, August 2012

Table tennis, pool & satellite TV were all a hit (especially with the Olympics on!) Beaches all lovely – forest & beaches just past Les Sables d’Olonne were great. L’Aiguillon sur Mer and Luçon markets were good for food and to wander around. Les jardins du Lonet really enjoyable, and Puy du Fou great day out for a family with two boys (12 & 15). Local wine route very interesting – found 3 and enjoyed tasting lots of wines!
Train trip not worth the travel but all else fantastic – and the French people were very positive about our attempts to converse in French.
Lovely villa & lovely area of France.

The Rock Family, Aylesbury. August 2012

We enjoyed our stay at Lapwing House (despite several bags of previous occupant's rubbish being left for us to admire all week!). La Rochelle well worth a trip - lovely harbour side restaurants and bustling markets. Superb beaches within 20 minutes … and the Aquarium is worth a visit.
The house is well stocked with amenities - ideal for our teenage kids, but there are lots of steps in unexpected places that could be a hazard for younger children. Scope for improvement with cleanliness between bookings, but otherwise a good time was had by all.

(Owners response: Unfortunately, the rubbish is collected on a Wednesday in this village, so there will always be some rubbish from previous guests - as soon as we were notified of the problem, we provided another large wheelie bin.)

The Norwood Family, Harpenden August 2012
Had a wonderful week here, loved the location, great house. Spent many hours in the pool. Hoping to come back next year to do some of the things we ran out of time to do. Had a great day in La Rochelle, loved the beach at Port Bourgenay and spent a lot of time in La Faute sur Mer - kids loved the go-karts.

The Websters & The Cambronnes, Herts. August 2012
A fantastic week enjoyed by 2 family groups. (children aged 7 months, 5 & 8) Great location for visiting beaches and markets. Day trips to Coulon, La Rochelle and Sables d'Olonnes reached within 1 hour and well worth the drive.
No sign of the baker's van throughout our stay - and if you want mussels at the bar opposite - book ahead!
The house has good family living, very spacious and enough facilities to occupy you for the day. However, the pool ladder is a hazard and the twin room next to the mezzanine needs a blind to block out the sunlight (if used as a bedroom). A larger fridge would make self-catering easier and softer lighting in the lounge would be a plus.
We really enjoyed the local seafood and would recommend the Hotel Atlantique in La Tranche sur Mer.
Found a great surfing cove/family friendly beach called 'Plage la Mine' - reached by following signs from Jard sur Mer (35 mins away)
Thank you to the owner of this lovely home - for renting out their property - we've loved it!

(Owner's response: The steps to the pool have been fixed and we will be adding a new fridge and blackout blind in readiness for next year - thank you for pointing these out to us!)

The Bartons, London. September 2012
Had a great holiday at Lapwing House. The kids absolutely loved the pool and picking fruit round the garden, especially the tasty blackberries!
A great part of France with fantastic beaches, our 1 year old loved splashing in the waves at La Tranche sur Mer and a trip to the Ile de Ré is definitely worth the €16.00 toll charge!
Agree, a small blind in the small downstairs bedroom would be a plus, but facilities all great and especially enjoyed beating my husband at table tennis! Great time had by all.

The Paynes - London. June 2013.
We've had the most thoroughly enjoyable holiday, the facilities in the house were everything and more that we required and when we had a problem with the TV - it was resolved quickly with no hassle.
The area is wonderful and we enjoyed La Rochelle, Les Sables and Coulon. The Ile de Ré is a must and well worth the toll!
I have no doubt that at some point we will be back.

The Jones & Sykes Families - Wales. July 2013
Lovely house with an amazing garden. Experienced lots of sunshine and thunderstorms. Ile de Rè is well worth the visit - beautiful island.

The Smith & Chapman Families. Lincoln - July/August 2013
Beautiful house and garden. All 8 of us enjoyed the pool. Lovely beaches and places of interest.
Many thanks for the use of the gorgeous house - a great base for a fantastic holiday.

The Cole & Fletcher Families. Tonbridge - August 2013
Lovely week in Lapwing House. Nice, safe and fenced-off garden - loads of space for the children to play.
We particularly enjoyed the market at Jard sur Mer on Monday, also the châteaux at Apremont and at Talmont St Hilaire with displays and children's activities at both. Il de Ré was lovely - but set off early as the traffic on to the island builds up and avoid driving through Marans (the D9 was much quicker)
We never encountered the bread van, but used the boulangerie a number of times in La Bretonniere which didn't take long.
Loved the beach at La Faute sur Mer, we also went to Plage la Mine - a great beach, but beware as there are strong currents.
Avoid the aquarium at La Rochelle in August - huge queues an very busy inside.

The Coombes Family, Wiltshire & Wicklow - August 2013
A wonderful house and gardens and nice size pool.
3 generations had a fantastic time together.
Some lovely beaches not far away - for a "family" feel. Had sunshine all week - 30 - 34 ℃ - little ones loved the swimming pool. Good location - nice family restaurants. Plenty of room for football etc.
Did not go far - know the area well but nice to have family together.

The Boase Family, Brighton - August 2013
We had a fantastic time - the weather has been gorges, the swimming pool amazing and the fruit from the garden has been yummy!
Must see - La Rochelle, La Faute sur Mer, Luçon's lovely gardens and the Puy du Fou - an unbelievable day!
No sign of the bread van though! 3 generations again, who had a VERY enjoyable stay.

The Hills, London - October 2013
Lovely, rustic abode in a great region. Lots of cycling through the Marais, cornfields, old vineyards - stopping at friendly tabacs for refreshments.
Ile de Ré is stunning, coastal towns deserted, peaceful surroundings and plenty to do. Probably all very different in height of summer!
The Trinder & Scott Families. Carterton. April 2014
Thank you for the use of your house - wonderful location with easy access to great beaches (La Faute sur Mer). Lovely local bar (if not open as much as one would like!).
La Rochelle & Ile de Ré well worth a visit - the latter great for cycling and lunching at harbour side restaurants.
Bread van a phantom, we're sure!

The Pratt Family. West Sussex. July/August 2014
Lovely spacious house but you have to do something about that bXXXdy light in the kitchen. Ok for short french people, but normal persons hit their head on it (often)!! Lovely house & fabulous holiday. Cleaning could be better, especially taking into consideration peak rates, cobwebs-a-plenty!
The bread van does exist. Arrives about 9-10am but doesn't announce herself. Look out for a lady in a white van. Great food over the road at La Tourterelle. Nicola is lovely and Antoine a great local character. Lovely beach at La Terrière for surfing. Park des Dunes at Brem sur Mer was so good for families (as long as you're not health & safety conscious!). Great rides and so much to do, 10€ each!

Owners response: We will be looking at doing something with the kitchen light over the winter, so hopefully this will sort out the problem.

The Bolton Family. West Auckland. August 2014
Morgan & Connor - We enjoyed the swimming pool. The floor outside the downstairs bathroom is very slippy, but we loved the house and garden.
Pizzeria at Mareuil is rubbish. Mirabelle & Au Fil des Saisons in Luçon are expensive & snobbish.

Owners response: Unfortunately, you chose the 2 most expensive restaurants in Luçon! Alternatives would have been L'Atelier or the Ardoise Gourmand, both of which have a good reputation for good food at decent prices, and with more atmosphere. There are also lots more restaurants along the coast at La Tranche or La Faute , only 15 minutes drive away, where you would have have a much greater choice. With regards to the slippy floor - we will look at putting a non-slip mat on the tiled floor.

The Braisher Family. Reading. August 2014
Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely, spacious house in the Vendée. We have had a relaxing time exploring the local area. Visited La Rochelle and the Aquarium which is well worth a look. The Château at Avrillé also makes a great day out - good for all ages! Local beaches are fantastic - how lucky the French are to have such a choice of superb beaches. Many thanks.

The Farmans, McQueens & Gorbutts. July 2015.
We had a great stay in this spacious house and gardens. Our grand daughter loved the pool.
It is a lovely area and we had many great meals. The bar opposite is excellent for Moules Frites on a Friday and lunch on a Sunday. Nicola , the owner, is very friendly and helpful.
The light in the kitchen bought it. Our son in law bent down to pick up our grand daughter and hit his head coming up - knocking the glass cover out.

Owners’ Response: The offending light fitting has been replaced with a new bar fitting that does not hang down from the ceiling.

The Greaves Family. Bristol & Guernsey. August 2015.
Lovely stay in Lapwing House. The children loved the pool and the garden is great for them to play in.
La Faute sur Mer is the best beach - huge breakers at high tide.
La Tranche sur Mer is excellent at high tide - but muddy at low tide.
House very well equipped and comfortable.

The Williamson Family. Goole. August 2015.
A lovely holiday in a beautiful place! My first time in the Vendee and it won’t be my last. Lovely house, the pool is the icing on the cake! Lynne.
Lovely place! Lovely weather! Come again please! Barbara.
It has been lovely and I have loved it! The pool is great! Amy.
It has been good. I liked the pool. Luke.
Lovely home and pool. Enjoyed great trips to Puy du Fou and Indian Forest (Kids will love it) Lovely beach at Jard sur Mer - great for rock pooling. Recommend La Rochelle and Ile de Ré, and nice restaurants in La Tranche. Will come again. Mark
